Magnets in the marine and underwater industries

    Published: 2023-03-08 10:12:48 • Daniel Gårdefelt

The navy and underwater industry make extensive use of magnets due to their special properties and resistance to harsh environments. Magnets are essential in many of the Navy's applications, including underwater exploration and navigation. We will look at some of the applications for magnets in the marine and underwater industries in this article.

Compasses are one of the most well-known applications for magnets in the marine sector. Sailors can navigate the open ocean by using a compass, which uses a magnetized needle to point in the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. For marine navigation, compasses continue to be a crucial tool that has been used for centuries.

Electric motors are used in a number of marine applications, including winches and cranes in addition to propulsion systems. The magnetic field that drives the rotor in these motors is produced by magnets. Since reliability is critical in their applications, higher efficiency and output power are enabled by the use of magnets in electric motors.

Magnetic couplings are used in fleet pumps and other equipment to transfer power from one shaft to another without physical contact. Magnets are used in these couplings to transmit torque from a motor to a pump or other equipment. Magnetic couplings are ideal for these applications because they have no seals and can operate in harsh environments.

Underwater rescue operations also make use of magnets. Sunken ships, equipment and other items are found and recovered using salvage magnets. Typically these magnets are attached to a crane or other lifting device and are lowered into the water to attract and retrieve the object.

Underwater exploration - underwater exploration equipment such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and underwater metal detectors use magnets. Magnets are used in these devices to detect and locate underwater objects such as shipwrecks, mines and other debris.

Dredging operations use magnets to remove ferrous material from the seabed. Dredge magnets are lowered into the water with a crane or other lifting device to pick up metal objects and debris. These magnets can be used to remove objects such as shipwrecks or to make room for underwater pipelines and cables.

In summary; due to their unique properties and ability to withstand harsh environments, magnets are widely used in the marine and underwater industries. Magnets are used in a variety of marine applications, from navigation to underwater exploration. Magnets are likely to continue to play an important role in the design and operation of marine equipment and technology as technology advances.
