Magnets are incredibly useful in almost all industries, in more ways than one. In addition to the functionality of being able to lift, hold or, for example, filter, magnets also function “purely naturally”, which is appreciated in many cases. In other situations, however, this can be a disadvantage and the ability to turn on and off when it suits is instead a desirable feature. This is exactly what electromagnets do!
Electromagnets are fully functional magnets as long as the power is on, but when the power is turned off, the magnetic force is released. This has several different uses in industry, including where larger electromagnetic lifters are used to easily lift, and just as easily release, scrap metal and other metal objects.
A more everyday example of the use of electromagnets is fire doors, which are found in most larger buildings today. Fire doors are held open by means of a switched-on electromagnet and can then be easily closed by means of the power being switched off.
In other situations, the strength of the electromagnet can also be adjusted by regulating the amount of current supplied to the magnet.
