In the midst of the major transition toward a fossil-free society, one component plays a crucial role that rarely makes the headlines: the magnet. Permanent magnets and electromagnets are at the heart of the technologies driving electrification forward, in everything from electric cars and wind turbines to industrial robots and heat pumps.
In an electric vehicle, high-performance permanent magnets are found in the electric drive motor. They are what convert electrical energy into motion with high efficiency and minimal loss. Without advanced neodymium magnet components, today’s electric car motors would not achieve the performance or compactness demanded by the market.
In wind power, magnets are used in generators to convert rotational energy into electricity. Direct-drive wind turbines with permanent magnet generators are particularly efficient because they lack a gearbox, thereby reducing maintenance requirements, a key factor for offshore wind farms.
The green industry as a whole relies on magnetic components in everything from induction charging and battery manufacturing to automated production lines. As electrification accelerates, global demand for advanced magnets is expected to rise sharply in the coming decades.
