When we think of batteries, magnets might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But in fact, magnets play an important role in the technology around lithium batteries – even if they aren’t inside the battery itself.
Magnets are mainly used in systems surrounding the battery, helping to monitor, protect, and control its function. Here are a few examples:
Magnetic sensors – In electric vehicles and smart devices, magnetic sensors are used to detect the battery’s position, temperature, or charge level. They help ensure everything is working as it should.
Safety and switches – Some systems use magnets in contactless switches, known as reed switches, that can turn power on or off without physical contact. This makes the technology safer and reduces wear and tear.
Electric motors and energy management – Electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries use strong electric motors controlled by magnets. These motors are often connected to the battery system, and magnetic fields are used to regulate energy flow and recharge during braking, for example.
So even though the lithium battery itself doesn’t contain magnets, magnets in the surrounding systems help make the technology smarter, more efficient, and safer.
