Magnets are today used in manufacturing industries both in large-scale and in smaller applications, something we discussed when we looked at how magnets are used for cleaning in industrial settings. Magnetic components and their properties are also used in large-scale, automated production – in many different ways and for many different purposes.
One area of application is material handling, where electromagnets are used to pick up and move metal parts, which is common in press lines and assembly cells. Using this type of magnet allows for flexible handling and avoids mechanical wear-and-tear. One industry where this is often used is the automotive industry.
Another area of application is separation and sorting, such as sheet metal separators at sheet metal handlers or material sorting at recycling plants. Magnetism is also found in motors and actuators, where magnets are essential in electric motors, pumps and for achieving certain types of precision movements.
In addition to these examples, magnets are used in many other applications where they contribute to higher production speeds, reduced mechanical wear, improved precision and increased flexibility.
