New in the World of Magnets: Magnetism Can Be Induced by Laser Light
Magnets are a mysterious material, and magnetism is an even more mysterious phenomenon. HYAB are magnet experts and know most things about magnets, yet there is still some mystery surrounding the phenomenon even for us. Due to the uncertainties in research, new discoveries about how magnets work and how they affect us are continuously being made.
A relatively recent study conducted by researchers at Stockholm University, among others, shows that magnetism can be induced with the help of laser light. More specifically, the researchers in the study managed to induce magnetism in materials that are normally non-magnetic, by "tricking" atoms and electrons into circulating in currents that make the material magnetic. What’s unique about the study is that they succeeded in doing this at room temperature — something that had never been achieved before.
What practical applications could this discovery have? According to the researchers, it could lead to the development of "ultrafast magnetic switches" that could speed up information transfer and enable higher-quality data storage. In addition, these switches could contribute to significantly faster and more energy-efficient computers in the future.
